According to family legend, James had lived or been born in or near Dublin.  His family had been in the linen business; involved in the production of Irish lace.  They may have come originally from Co. Wexford in the S. of Ireland. His parents died while he was yet young, and he was raised by
two uncles, who were wealthy linen merchants at Belfast, and an abusive stepmother.  They are said to have owned linen mills at Belfast.  James emigrated about 1814 from Belfast, Co. Armaugh, Ireland as a stowaway on a cattle boat when he was about 14 years old .   He returned to Ireland about 20 years later to collect his inheritance only to learn that when he had run
away to America he had lost all his rights to it.  He returned to America by1843, probably through the port at Baltimore, MD.  He was reportedly living in MD and VA before 1840 and in Madison Co., OH in 1840. He removed on about 1844 to Clark Co., IL. He  may have been a laborer on the National Road which was being built through Clark Co. , IL at that time.

James Doran married Jane Hardway, natural daughter of Andrew Hardway Sr. and Margaret Sherrit at Clark Co, IL on 27 October 1844.
