According to family legend, Andrew Hardway Sr. was born on the banks of the Rhine River in Southern Germany*.  He migrated  with his parents to America at a very early age  [This could be in error and actually refer to his father George Hardway]. They first settled at Hightown, Highland Co.,  VA, which originally was part of Pendleton Co..   Andrew Hardway, Sr. married Margaret Sherrit, possible daughter of Daniel Sharrit and Mary Catherine Meyer, at Pendleton Co.,VA on 19 Oct 1809.  The ceremony was performed  at the home of his father, George Hardway, by George Guthrie, Baptist Minister of the Gospel.   They were enumerated in the 1810 census at Pendleton Co., VA.  He enlisted into the War of 1812 as a private in  Col. Sharp's 6th VA Militia, Capt. Johnson's Co., on  September 13,  1813 at Franklin, VA . He fought in the Battle of New Orleans under Andrew Jackson and at the Battle of Tippecanoe under William Henry Harrison.  He was Discharged on 14 March 1814 at Norfolk, VA.. He was enumerated in the 1820 census at Pendleton Co.,VA.  He received no compensation for war services, but in 1824 accepted a Land Grant from the government in lieu of pay .  About that year, he and his family moved  by covered wagon to the area near Columbus, Franklin Co., OH.   They were enumerated in the 1830 census at Jefferson Twp., Fayette Co., OH.  Between  December 1838 and May 1839, Andrew Hardway Sr. purchsed over 600 acres of land in Orange and Johnson Twps., Clark Co., IL  His residence was listed as OH.  About 1839 they removed to Clark Co., IL and settled on 40 acres of land S. of Martinsville in Orange Twp.   They later moved to a farm about 1/4 Mile W. of  Neadmore.  They were enumerated in the 1850 census at Johnson Prct., Clark Co., IL.  Andrew was a farmer.

They were some of the earliest settlers to this area.  Their youngest son, Francis Marion was the first white (non-Indian) chlid born at Orange Twp., Clark Co., Martinsville, IL.

On March 25, 1851 Andrew redeemed a Land Grant Warrant for 80 acres in Orange Twp.  The deed for this Warrant is signed 1 July 1851 by Pres. Millard Fillmore.. Andrew Hardway, Sr. was enumerated in the census at Orange Twp., Clark Co,IL in 1870.

Andrew Hardway, Sr. died on his farm at Clark Co., IL.  He was buried at Baird-Barr Cem.,Martinsville Twp.,Clark Co.,IL.

*This legend could be in error; actually referring to his father George. There is some evidence that this is the George that came over at a young age with his father Jurg and served in the Revolutionary War.
